Waterspots are no fun. Trust me, sometimes I find myself unintentionally parking next to a sprinkler system and have it ruin my fresh car wash. I often ask myself "What are the water spots doing to my paint and why are they so difficult to remove".
Waterspots come from unfiltered, mineral-ridden water. When the sun dries the water up typically minerals are left deposited onto your paint job. They may look harmless but over time they can etch out your car paint permanently if left untreated.
Usually, if you catch the water spots before they dry you can wipe them away with no problem. The usual practice for removing water spots is an acidic car-safe compound that effectively dissolves the spots.
If the water spots are so etched into the paint that the compound doesn't work, the next best option is a paint correction service.
